I tried creating a message board like this for the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland, and its members looked at it, tried it, and voted to remove it from the Internet.  They felt that they preferred to use the Yahoo groups email and web based product instead. Personally, I like the format and usability of this type of forum for communication within a guild, but apparently no one else shared my opinion.
